"As the carpenter was scheduled to start framing right away, it was important to have an expert inspect the problem. It was after 5:30pm and I called one of the better-known waterproofing companies. I was greeted by a voicemail who let me know that office hours were until 4:30.

I then called Abarent Construction. I did not expect to have anyone answer however to my surprise I was greeted by a friendly voice who introduced himself as Kevin. He asked me to explain what we had discovered and then he determined that an inspection of the foundation was required. He said that because my time frame was short, he would come over that evening at 8:00.

At 8:00, Kevin arrived at our home and did a complete inspection of the foundation both inside and out. He found the problem and explained what needed to be done to repair this. Kevin left us with a detailed quote and information on how the work would be completed. He also said that he would move the job up as a priority to ensure that this would be completed prior to the basement walls being closed up so that we would not encounter any damage should it rain.

Kevin then called back the next day to answer any questions that we might have. We booked the work and within a few hours we received a call from your office telling us when the work would start. The day prior to this start date, an employee from your company showed up and started the project. The job was completed ahead of schedule and the workers ensured us that when they left, the yard looked just like it did when they arrived. Well actually it looked better, as they volunteered to haul away some of the drywall scraps and ruined carpets that were left from the basement contractors.

A few days later we received a call from Kevin asking us if everything went well and if we had any concerns.

We live in a society where all businesses state that they offer excellent customer service, however, few truly deliver on this promise. It is terrific to see that your company's motto of "Quality without Compromise" is more than just words.

"My call was returned right away by Bill Wallace and an appointment was set up for August 18, to have him cover over to my house and have my basement inspected.

On August 18, when Bill Wallace arrived at my house, I explained to him that I had a very basic knowledge about basement repairs and he put me at ease with his knowledge of the trade, which included his references that he had in his possession. After carefully inspecting my basement and explaining to me what he had to do to fix my basement, I felt very comfortable about having my repairs done with your company.

About a week later, on August 27 Edmonton was hit with a big rainstorm again and my basement started to have a lot of water in it. I started to panic right away because I did not know what to do. Despite interfering with their long weekend, the crew was still very professional and very polite and the entire work was completed by August 30.

"To accomplish these repairs, the house was lifted; the original foundation was removed, replaced with new footings, walls and basement floor and the house was then lowered onto the new foundation.

This letter briefly describes our experiences of this event.

Prior to the work:

We obtained estimates from two of the three main contractors in Alberta who can perform the type of major foundation work we required. Both sent representatives to our house, discussed the problem as we saw it, answered questions and then submitted work and cost estimates.

One contractor provided a single-page generalized listing of the work to be done. This did not address all the requirements we had discussed and specified a single flat-fee charge for the work. Following this estimate we received no follow-up from this contractor to discuss or clarify their estimate.

Abarent provided a three-page, itemized list of the specific work to be done at each stage of the project. This included descriptions of the optional issues (including additional costs) that might arise during the work. In addition, Kevin Braddell, Abarent’s General Manager, did the initial walk-through for their estimate and later went through it, line by line. He pointed out potential problems and things we had to prepare for during the work (extra cracks, concrete dust, effects on neighbors etc.) We selected Abarent.

During the work:

Complicated projects like this require excellent management to ensure everything happens when it should. Throughout, Kevin provided timely information as to "what was to happen when" and, most importantly, what to tell the neighbor! All the different crews we dealt with during the project acted in a civil and business-like manner. The project was completed on time and on budget.

Repairing or fixing a foundation is a very traumatic event for any householder because all of your house investment is (literally!) in the air. If you have to do it, call Abarent. They are professional – we cannot recommend them highly enough."
